The WriteHive Mentorship Buzz

I’m thrilled to announce that my YA King Arthur retelling book, Swords & Stones, has been selected for WriteHive’s 2022 mentorship program!

If you don’t know what the WriteHive is (hi Mom), here is a quick description and link their website:

“WriteHive is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization dedicated to helping writers achieve their goals. We have a variety of events and programs dedicated towards that purpose. We are run 100% by a group of dedicated volunteers passionate about providing opportunities to the writing community that are normally inhibited by financial means.”

About the mentorship:

“WriteHive is excited to announce another way to break down barriers in publishing. Our new Mentorship Program has various mentorships available for all publishing paths (trad, self, small press, serialization, etc).

Mentorships are available for all publishing paths (trad, self, small press, serialization, etc). Rather than organize our mentorships by genre, we’re focusing on where you’re aiming for your writing career.”

I submitted my book back in November to three mentors and was selected by the lovely Lauren T. Davila when the pairings were announced on December 5th.

Lauren is an author, anthologist, and editor (she does it all!). Her enthusiasm for my book is already blowing my mind and I am eager to learn from her. You can order her anthology books here.

Lauren was actually the reason I submitted to this mentorship in the first place. I saw the opportunity floating around Twitter and didn’t know much about it, but after researching and seeing that it was organized by publishing path (i.e. – traditional, small press, or self-publish), I was inspired to browse the mentors. I bookmarked a few mentors who seemed like they would be interested in fantasy, but when I saw Lauren’s wishlist, I knew she was the one for me. Not only did she list practically everything that I love in stories (portals, myth, court-intrigue, chosen one tropes, superheroes, pirates – oh my!) This line in particular grabbed me “Arthurian retellings of any sort. Fix the hole that Merlin left in my heart.”

Y’all. I have been obsessed with BBC’s Merlin since I discovered it years ago. Give me any Arthurian book, show, or movie and I will gobble them up, but Merlin always holds a special place in my heart because it has younger characters and is full of magic, love, and cheeky British humor (the perfect combo).

So, you can imagine my excitement when Lauren messaged to notify me I had been selected. Ahhhhh!

Over the next few months, possibly longer, Lauren will provide editing feedback on my story with the goal to make it stronger. I am excited for this opportunity because it will give me a chance to level-up my editing skills and make this book the best if possibly can be.

What comes after that? Only Merlin knows, and he’s not sharing yet. =)

Interested to learn more about my book? I will be crafting another blog entry with the pitch and backstory of how I wrote it. You can expect all my King Arthur recommendations as well.

Stay tuned!
